New Teeth and Other Stuff

Here’s the happy girl grinning at Blue’s Clues (I distracted her so she’d look at the camera and snapped the picture). She’s got a bit of sweet potato left on her face which looks lovely in this light.

Emily is finally getting some teeth and, it appears, they are all coming in at once. She has two new teeth erupting on the bottom which makes four total teeth on the bottom. She has another tooth coming in on the top in the lateral (side) gum area, making for three teeth on top. I have a strong suspicion that she is cutting a molar because she is the drool queen. She won’t let me get near her mouth (another sign that she’s uncomfortable) so I can’t confirm that.

Emily is contendedly watching Blues Clues. This is what I call her “Blue’s Clues trance.” Sometimes she forgets to blink and her eyes get all watery.

Emily is starting to say more and more, although I admit it’s hard to understand her. She seems to have trouble with “L” sounds and “D” sounds. She’ll say “Boo Cooo” for Blue’s Clues and “Aggee” for “Daddy.” She also won’t make an “N” sound so she can’t say her sister’s name. Her top words include “puppy” (her favorite stuffed animal), “cup” (her favorite possession), “ommy,” “thanks” or “thank you,” “cheese,” “shoes,” “head,” “achoo,” “meow,” and of course the classics “hi,” “bye,” and “ow.” Not all of these words are legible, but she’s getting better and better. She seems to be saying much more than those few words, but as I said, it’s difficult to understand her. Luckily she does not get frustrated. Part of the reason for this is that she is very good with nonverbal communication and does have some signs she uses to get what she wants (“more” and “bath” for example).

Meet Sachin!

This little cutie is Sachin. Sachin was born with a unilateral cleft lip/palate and he received nasoalveolar molding (NAM) treatment at a facility in London Ontario. Sachin’s daddy, Balaji, found Emily’s web site and Sachin is now one of her cyber buddies. You can see more pictures of this cutie pie in the NAM gallery. Thanks Balaji, for sharing Sachin’s beautiful smile. Sachin will be one in January and is scheduled to have his palate repaired the day after his birthday. I will post an update on him at that time.

First Dentist Visit & Autumn Pictures

We took Ana and Emily to the dentist for the very first time today. There’s only one pediatric dentist within 50 miles of where we live, so it took around 2 months to even get the girls in to see him. I have to say, I wasn’t impressed. He was good with both of them, but his knowledge seemed a bit questionable. He actually asked if Emily had had surgery yet! I mean, it’s fairly obvious that her lip is not open at this point, even if you aren’t a professional pediatric dentist. I think NYU has me spoiled with the level of care we get from them.

In any case, the visit went well. Ana had one tiny cavity which she’ll get filled in JANUARY and Emily has no cavities (she only has four teeth), but she has two new teeth coming through, one on the bottom and one on the top towards the back. The dentist said Emily’s late teething has nothing to do with her cleft – another point I disagree with him on since the experts at NYU say it’s quite normal for teeth to erupt late with a cleft.

Now for the pictures – I took lots of pictures of the girls this weekend (we had a gorgeous unseasonably warm November day on Sunday).

Emily and Ana share a giggly sister moment.

Here’s Ana preventing Emily from going any closer to the street. (Emily’s just staring at her grinning)

The two of them marched around the driveway like this for 20 minutes.

Ana showed Emily how to play in the leaves and Emily had fun practicing.

Prayers for Rachel

Meet Rachel, Emily’s cyber buddy. Rachel is four months younger than Emily and was born with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Rachel did not use the NAM, but her mother Darcy found Emily’s blog and was inspired to create a blog for Rachel. Rachel is truly a loved and loving child – take some time to read her story and get to know her.

Rachel will be getting her palate surgery tomorrow morning, so I wanted to be sure to ask anyone who happens upon Emily’s blog in the next day or so to send out some extra prayers for Rachel and her family so they get through this surgery with flying colors, and so that Rachel is home safe and sound as soon as possible . Darcy, lots of white light and positive thoughts are coming your way from New York.
